Cow Head
The timbers that I have the pleasure of using comes from all over the country, some are not seen by most Luthier’s. They are not easy to find and take time to source, experiment with and develop, or they are just too hard to work and use. Some of these timbers strike a cord with me straight away, I can see what I want, what I can do with them, and I get a vision in my head of what will come out of this one off section. Some of the timbers I use I only have enough for one guitar, and I don’t know if I will ever see the same timber again in some cases. Here in lie the attraction.
Others take time to feel out, they are beautiful rich sections, some are too unique, I don’t know what the guitar will be that they are destined for, but I know that the section will make an exquisite guitar, I am just not sure how or why yet, and it will need time to develop.
The Cow Head guitar is one that took some time. I had the back, sides and neck, the Tiger Myrtle, for about a year in my workshop, cut and ready to use. It took that long to figure out its destiny. A truly rural, earthy, guitar that represents rural Australia with rich tones and a continuity of red colours offset with yellow highlights of Huon Pine, and the pink of the Burl Tasmanian Oak.
